Dr.Rudzani trained as a paediatrician at the Red Cross War Memorial Children’s Hospital and the University of Cape Town (UCT), obtaining a Fellowship in Paediatrics (FCPaeds) with the Colleges of Medicines of South Africa (CMSA) in 2004. After this he completed an M.Sc. (Public Health Developing Countries) at the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine (LSHTM, 2008). He has an interest in infectious diseases with a special emphasis on vaccine preventable diseases. Currently Dr. Rudzani is the Director of the paediatric HIV Clinical Services at Groote Schuur Hospital while completing a PhD on the epidemiology of pertussis with UCT, under the mentorship of Prof. Hussey.
Dr. Rudzani's research work on pertussis is pivotal in the control of the disease. In Cape Town, Dr. Rudzani has built a well developed clinical infrastructure to characterise pertussis epidemiology. He is a holder of several grants and scholarships. Dr. Rudzani has recently received funding to conduct a modelling study, aimed at exploring the most optimal vaccination strategies against pertussis in low and middle income countries.
Dr. Rudzani has supervised and continue to supervise several postgraduate students in clinical medicine as well as in public health.
Dr. Rudzani is one of the three leadership team members at VACFA. He is a course co-convener of the Annual African Vaccinology Course conducted by VACFA. He works closely with Dr. Kagina and Prof. Hussey on the day to day operations of VACFA as well as on the strategic growth of the group.
